Preventative Dental Care

Advanced Smile Institute happily takes on the role of both dental care practitioners and dental care educators. At Advanced Smile Institute we know that preventative dental care is important at all ages. Proper at-home techniques can help keep smiles vibrant and healthy while preventing the following:

  • Gum Disease: Starting with gingivitis, this periodontal disease is the inflammation of gums caused by plaque and is one of the most common oral conditions.
  • Tooth Loss: Gingivitis can lead to other periodontal diseases which can cause serious tooth and even jaw damage, and without deep teeth cleaning can result in tooth loss.
  • Hygienic – bad breath and yellowing: bad breath can result from an overabundance of bacteria in the mouth and can increase if flossing, teeth cleaning, and regular dental checkups are not prioritized. Over time teeth also naturally lose their vibrancy and even more so from regularly consuming products such as coffee, red wine, or cigarettes, among others.

The following five teeth cleaning practices and routines can be the keys to preventing plaque build-up, cavities, and all other dental defects, keeping teeth and gums healthy and clean:

  1. Make sure to visit us for a routine teeth cleaning and evaluation at least every 6 months
  2. Brush after every meal with fluoride-based toothpaste using a soft-bristled toothbrush. Brush teeth in a very small circular motion (or vibrate) at a 45 degree angle to the gums. For a complete cleaning, brush also the gums and tongue.
  3. Floss at least once a day.
  4. In addition to teeth cleaning, rinse with an antibacterial mouthwash to kill excess plaque and bacteria.
  5. Try to keep processed sugars intake to a minimum, and try to keep snacking between meals to a minimum.

Deep Teeth Cleaning

In some cases, a regular teeth cleaning can only accomplish so much, and, upon a dental evaluation, a thorough deep teeth cleaning is needed as well. This evaluation tends to involve the measurement of the gum tissue using a periodontal probe, and ideal measurements are between 1 mm and 3 mm. Deep teeth cleaning is often required for periodontal defects and gum inflammation beyond the 3 mm mark as well as for treating chronic bleeding of the gums. This process can include scaling and root planning.

Since patient comfort and convenience is the top concern at Advanced Smile Institute, we typically schedule deep teeth cleaning for two separate appointments. To maintain ideal patient comfort, we treat one, two, or all four sections of the mouth at one appointment, and treat the remaining areas of the mouth at the following appointments, normally within one week. An overall evaluation will follow, and we will determine the need for additional deep teeth cleaning appointments to ensure that gum levels have stabilized.
